3 Ways to Give Your Content Additional Shelf Life

Refresh, repurpose and repost your well-performing blog content

You spent hours writing, editing, and finding just the right graphic for the perfect blog post. Now, it’s time to share. Then you post it on your blog and share it on social and in your weekly email newsletter. But have you ever thought, what’s next? While SEO will help your content piece bring in organic traffic, there has to be more, right?

You’re 100 percent correct. There is more. There is nothing worse than seeing you’re thoughtfully created content moving down your blogroll collecting dust. By incorporating a few tips and tricks, you can refresh and repurpose your content to attract new readers and potential new customers.

Here are three easy tips to get a little more life out of your existing content.

#1 Update Your Content and Images

Unless you’re posting about your grandmother’s famous shortcake recipe, it’s likely there have been a few updates to the topic your post is covering. One way to make sure your content doesn’t look out of date, and you less reliable, is to develop a content refresh plan. This is a simple way to make sure you’re providing your readers with the latest information, and you look like the eternal pro. From updated statistics to new products to brand-new images, there’s always something that can be adjusted.

Depending on your bandwidth, make a plan to go back and refresh old content every six months to a year. That way, when your readers come back to their bookmarked blog post or find you via Google, they will have only the latest information.

#2 Keep SEO in Mind

Like everything on the internet, SEO best practices continue to evolve. That’s why it is essential to go back and make sure you’re putting your best foot forward for search. Whether it’s updating title tags, H1s and H2s, or cleaning up your outbound and internal links, you want to make sure you’re putting the user first and keeping up with the ever-changing best practices.

As a bonus to creating a better user experience, Google rewards freshness in its ranking factors. If the search giant takes note that a historically well-performing blog post had a bit of a facelift, you may see a boost in your search engine ranking.

#3 Rethink Your Social and Newsletter Strategy

If your current social strategy is to post your amazing content once and walk away, we need to talk. You’ve put time, money, and effort into creating a piece of stellar blog content. So, why let it drift into your follower’s newsfeed once and walk away? Use new captions, update images (we love Canva!), and try different post types to keep long-time followers interested and pique the interest of new followers.

Don’t forget about your newsletters. Add existing blog content to your email newsletters to make sure your subscribers are seeing the content too. This also gives long-time subscribers another chance of interacting with your content.
